Elon Musk warns AI will outsmart mankind by the end of next year

From Terminator to Ex Machina, machines overthrowing their human creators is a staple of science fiction.

But the robot uprising could be closer than you think, as Elon Musk warns AI will surpass the abilities of humanity by the end of next year.

Speaking in an interview on X, the Tesla CEO claimed that AI would become more intelligent than the smartest human within two years. 1/1 Skip Ad Continue watchingafter the adVisit Advertiser websiteGO TO PAGE PLAYTop Stories by Daily Mail 01:00 Video Settings Full Screen About ConnatixV464060 The astronomical events of 2024 that you won't wantto miss

And, within five years, Musk even predicts that 'sentient' AIs will outnumber humans.

However, humanity might have a chance as Musk also claims that a shortage in advanced chips and electricity could hold back AI's development.  +5 View gallery

Films like Ex Machina (pictured) have often imagined what might happen when AI surpasses the abilities of humanity Advertisement

Speaking to Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management, yesterday, Musk claimed that AI was 'the fastest advancing technology of any kind.'

Mr Musk said: 'My guess is that we'll have AI that is smarter than any one human probably around the end of next year.

'The total amount of, sort of, sentient compute of AI, I think will probably exceed all humans in five years.'

His claims are based on the observation that an exponential amount of computing power is being turned over for AI projects each year.

'AI is the fastest advancing technology I've seen of any kind, and I've seen a lot of technology,' Musk said.

'AI hardware and computers that are coming online dedicated to AI are increasing by a factor of 10 every year, if not every 6-9 months.'  TRENDING Beach huts are blown into the sea and cars submerged underwater 16.1k viewing now I was catfished by a fake Gary Barlow on Facebook 11k viewing now Islamic State 'threatens terrorist attack on Champions League games 16.8k viewing now

The rapid growth in computing power, or 'compute', has been taken by some to be a sign that AI's development will be similarly rapid.  +5 View gallery

In the interview, Musk claimed that a 'politically correct' AI could decide to kill people of a certain race or gender to enforce its views - a scenario eerily reminiscent of some killer-robot films such as Terminator (pictured)

During the interview, Musk weighed in on Google's Gemini AI which has been mired in scandal after refusing to generate images of white people.

Musk said: 'It's very important to train the AI to be as truthful as possible, I think you can get some very dangerous things when you programme an AI to be politically correct.'

He added that while the initial effects of 'politically correct' AI might seem benign, the eventual consequences could be dire.

'If an AI has so much power, it can actually enforce diversity and decide there's too many of one kind of people or too many of one sex and kill off enough until the diversity number is what it is programmed to believe is correct,' he said.

Musk also said he believed Google would not remove the political bias from its AI but that this would become 'less obvious and more subtle.'  +5 View gallery

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Musk claims that the 'compute growth chart' (pictured bottom right), which tracks the amount of computer resources dedicated to AI, was evidence of the technology's rapid advance Advertisement

Musk has consistently claimed that AI advancement is far faster than others might think.

He has also been vocal about the potential dangers of the technology, repeatedly warning that advanced AIs could be 'one of the biggest threats to humanity'.

Despite his concerns, Musk has been one of the key figures in the development of modern AI.

He was the co-founder of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, but has since sued the company for failing to develop the technology for the benefit of humanity.

OpenAI denies these claims and insists that Musk 'told us we would fail, started a competitor, and then sued us when we started making meaningful progress towards OpenAI's mission without him.'

Musk is also pursuing the development of his own generative AI system, Grok AI.

In the interview, he claimed that Grok 1.5 would be finished by May and would be better than ChatGPT-4.

However, he also suggested that the development of his AI and others could be held back by shortages of advanced chips mainly produced by Nvidia.

Although he claims that those shortages are now easing, the price and supply of electricity could pose another problem.

Musk said: 'Last year [AI] was chip constrained...people could not get enough Nvidia chips. This year it's transitioning to a voltage transformer supply. In a year or two [the constraint is] just electricity supply.'
